Robert Plant called Gwyn Ashton “King of tone and feel” and even said that his duo, Two-Man Blues Army, was “better than The Black Keys”. Plant’s band even played on Ashton’s album Radiogram, with Robert’s legendary guitarist Robbie Blunt trading licks on a track in a lap slide and Stratocaster guitar dual. Ashton has also jammed with David Crosby, Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck, Bogert and Appice), Rainbow’s Graham Bonnet and Cream’s lyricist Pete Brown (White Room, Sunshine of Your Love), but in their living rooms! In the 80s Gwyn Ashton played with legendary singer Stevie Wright (The Easybeats), recorded on two of Masters Apprentices Jim Keays’ solo albums in the ‘90s and in 2000 played with Rory Gallagher’s band for five years after Rory passed away. He’s even been songwriting and recording with Screaming Jets’ frontman Dave Gleeson. Over a course of his 11 album releases, he has guests on them including members of Plant’s and Gallagher’s bands, Guns N Roses, Whitesnake, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Deep Purple and more. After Billy Thorpe asked Ashton if Mick Fleetwood could sit in his band one night Fleetwood ‘s producer approached him with “a band that I can’t mentio
