Awarded a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at an early age, he went on to write and stage his first musical, <em>Alice</em>, during his undergraduate years, and served as principal clarinettist with the Australian Youth Orchestra before completing his performance degree at the Canberra School of Music.</p><p>In the late 1980s and early '90s, James worked as a film and TV post-production sound engineer, collaborating with many of Australia's leading directors and producers of the era. When the Australian film industry contracted in the 1990s, he found an unexpected second career in software engineering. Over the following 25 years, while raising two daughters, he never stopped developing musically. He completed postgraduate studies in composition, served as musical d
