In the spring of 2007, The Brakes took on dual city residencies, performing weekly in New York City and Philadelphia. Playing at the Knitting Factory in NYC every Tuesday and at MilkBoy in Ardmore, PA every Thursday, the band transitioned from famed NYC rock club to intimate listening room, often times rearranging their songs for each different setting. Each show was recorded and the best versions from both cities were assembled together for a cohesive live statement. Mixed by Tommy Joyner at MilkBoy Studios the resulting album reflects the different envionments in which the songs were recorded, together crafting "A Tale of Two Cities". The Brakes are a genuine rock and roll band at first glance.

However given a closer look, elements of folk, jazz and even post-rock reveal themselves, making their sound a distinct intertwining of American music, held together by insightful lyrics and memorable songs. Their musicality shines through as the members switch instruments, trading guitars, basses and keyboards for trumpets and saxophones. The band's success is evident in the range of acts that this band has shared the bill with: Dave Matthews Band to The Hold Steady, Live to Willie Nelson & John Fogerty. Formed in Philadelphia, the band has toured extensively nationwide over the last several years. They have received regular airplay on WXPN (as well as performing at their festival), headlined The Fillmore at TLA on several occasions and released three CDs, EPs Volumes 1,2 and 3 which chronicle the band's development and musical maturation.
